The university with today's name was founded in 1976 but the University of Saigon, the precursor of today's university was founded in 1941 by French colonists in the period of French Indochina. In 1961, the university was split into two: Medicine University of Saigon and University of Pharmacy of Saigon. In 1964, University of Dental Care of Saigon was founded from a division of Medicine University. In 1976, these two universities were merged into today's name university.
